Most people, when asked, will rate movies and food as one of their top priorities during the day. What do you like to do during your free time? Oh I like to watch movies, eat and hang out with friends. People like food and people like movies and what if these two were merged. I am talking about movies about food and fortunately there are loads of these. This article discusses ten such movies about food. You should be able to watch a trailer of each one of these on YouTube. The interesting bit is that only three of the ten movies discussed in this list are actually in the English language which is weird because USA consumes a lot of food. In fact, I only learned recently that if the whole world consumed as much as them, we would need five Earths to feed the people. Enjoy the read.

10. BIG NIGHT

Primo and Secondo move from Italy to America to open up an Italian restaurant. Primo is a talented chef and is brilliant when it comes to cooking. Secondo is the front-man who keeps the restaurant running financially. He is also a painter. Primo will prepare a huge feast for this brothers’ night. What is it? You will have to watch the movie. It was released in 1996 and is English.

9. CHOCOLAT

Vianne Rocher and her young daughter move to a town in rural France. They open up a chocolate shop. She wins the town over by her delicious chocolates and exuberance. The mayor however, is determined to shut her down. She teaches the townspeople about acceptance and finds love while on this path. The movie was released in the year 2000 and is English.

8. KITCHEN STORIES

While preparing the house meals, according to research, the housewife walks the distance between Stockholm and Congo yearly. That’s why a team of eighteen observers is sent out to map out the routine of single men in the kitchens. The team is assembled by Home Research Institute. They would be on call all day and would sit on chairs that were strategically placed in the kitchens. These researchers were not to be spoken to or included in the activities of the kitchen. The movie came out 2003 and is Norwegian.

7. BELLA MARTHA

Chef Martha is the queen of the kitchen in Germany. She didn’t not like criticism over her cooking because her life is centered around it. She is a workaholic but that changes when her sister dies and leaves behind an eight year old daughter. Her name is Lina. The workplace hires a new chef and his name is Mario. She feels threatened by him. What happens next is what you will have to see for yourself. The movie was released in 2001 and is German.

6. GOD OF COOKERY

The God of Cookery is the title of a brilliant chef. People would challenge him from time to time and he would judge                 them. But then there comes a jealous chef who exposes him to be this con-man that he is and humiliates him in public. He then takes on the title and rises to the top. The former God however, tries to pull himself together and tries his luck for the top again. He wants to challenge his rival to find out once and for all who the true God really is. The movie came out in 1996 and is Cantonese.

5. TAMPOPO

The story is about this guy Goro who is a trucker. He comes into town in order to help Tampopo set up a perfect fast-food noodle restaurant. The movie is kind humorous by the way. There are many smaller stories that have been included in the plot that discuss the importance of food. The story range from a gangster who mixes sex with food to an old lady that terrorizes a shopkeeper. The movie came out in 1985 and is Japanese.

4. LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE

Tita is not allowed to marry because she has to take care of her mother who is ageing. Tita and Pedro want to get married though. This leads to Pedro marrying Tita’s sister. He tells Tita that he only married her sister so he could be closer to Tita herself. Tita is then forced to make the wedding came which is actually very sad and is evident on the faces of the wedding guests as well. She soon discovers that she can do strange things with her cooking. The movie came out 1992 and is Spanish.

3. THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE, AND HER LOVER

The movie is about a wife of brutal crime boss. She engages in a secret affair with a bookseller between meals at her husband’s restaurant. The film is really interesting with all the food, sex, murder, torture, color coding and cannibalism. The movie has been beautifully filmed with all the elements I just mentioned and has been interpreted as a symbol for Thatcherism. The movie came out in the year 1989 and was originally released in the English language.

2. EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN

Chef Chu lives in a house in Taipei. It is a big house and he has three unmarried daughters. Jia-jen is a chemistry teacher who converted to Christianity. Jia-Chien is an airline executive while the third sister named Jia-Ning is a student who works in a fast food restaurant. The movie of the story revolves around the dinners every Sunday and the love life of each of the four family members. It is an interesting movie that came out in 1994 and is in Mandarin.

1. BABETTE’S FEAST

The movie dates back to the 19th century Denmark. Two sisters live with their father. Their father is a pastor of a church. They sisters have had the opportunity to leave the small town but they choose to stay with their father. Later a French woman appears at their door and begs them to her in and she starts working for them. The father dies later and in order to commemorate his 100th birthday the sisters decide to hold a dinner. The French woman prepares the feast of a lifetime for the members of the church. The movie released in 1987 and is Danish.
